Inner Mongolia Travel and Transportation

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Chinese Nei Menggu Zizhiqu, Mongolian Öwör Mongol Öörtöö Zasax Oron (ÖMÖZO) is one of the five autonomous regions of the People’s Republic of China. It means in Mongolian “Southern Mongolia”, the name “Inner Mongolia” (in contrast to the “Outer Mongolia”, the real Mongolia) came from the Chinese administrative practice whereby the Southern Mongolia is closer to Beijing than to Outer Mongolia. The description follows the same logic with which the Foreign Office has once created a Near, Middle and Far East.

Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is bordered to the north by Russia and Mongolia. In the south it borders – from west to east – in Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.

The climate of Inner Mongolia is continental temperate with long, cold winters and short warm summers. From southeast to northwest, the rainfall decreases steadily, to the west of Inner Mongolia are then deserts.
